If the trees in the background look a bit skinny, blame Lego and the laws of optics. Lego makes their trees with multiple horizontal planes of plastic, separated by gaps, held together on a single narrow vertical trunk of plastic. If you look at them from straight on, they look a bit like combs. And then if they're in the background of a photo where you focus on the foreground, the planes of plastic blur and optically mix with the background behind them, due to the limited depth of field of the camera optics. Since I'm removing the background and filling it with a cloudy sky texture, I need to decide whether to leave the blurred tree/background mix in the image, or cut it out. For the most part I've cut it out, leaving the bare trunks you can see. But there are also some areas where you can see the result if I leave it in - particularly the pine tree immediately in front of Terry's face in panel 2. You can see the shape of the pine tree, but it's grey, not green. I might have to come up with some way to handle this particular problem better in future. One way might be to tilt the trees either towards or away from the camera bit, so the separate planes are no longer visible - although this would make it more difficult to set the trees securely. Unless I put Lego hinges on all of them. Like the palm trees in Thunderbirds. There were cool.

I originally gave the last line to Paris, but then I realised that in realspace she's still unconscious. The background in the last panel is a photo I took ascending out of Narita Airport near Tokyo. The colour balance changes a bit when I display it on my screen and use it as a background behind the set when I take the photo.

The Grants Committee has concluded the voting of the November 2018 round.

There was one proposal this round, which was not approved.

A Complete (Interactive) Perl 6 Course with Exercises (9,996 USD)

Voting results: Not approved: 3 YES votes with a score of 11 (2 votes of 5, 1 vote of 1), 4 NO votes

This was a close vote. Many members were very enthusiastic about this project. Others, while agreeing that a course like this would be good for the language, were concerned about:

• Hosting: Previous grants designed to create a site have failed due to a lack of support/hosting for the completed software/content; Delaying this decision until the content is created could result in a technically successful grant, but a product that is not deployable.
• Technology: One potential suggestion for the technology for the interactive examples was offered, but are no details about how that would work or impact hosting.
• Content Details: More specifics about the items in the 3 content groups would be helpful.

If there are any community members who would be willing to host a solution like the one proposed, please reach out to Andrew or the committee (or the Board).

We accept proposals throughout the year; our next round of review will begin the first week of May. You can submit proposals now.
